Spring Cleaning Your Laundry Routine in Sandpoint
Spring in North Idaho is beautiful — and muddy. Between the snowmelt, the trail conditions, and the sheer volume of winter gear that needs to be cleaned before it gets stored, April and May are peak laundry months around Sandpoint and Ponderay.
Here's a practical guide to tackling the spring laundry pile without losing your mind.
1. Horse Blankets
If your horses wore blankets through the winter, now's the time to wash them before you fold them up for storage. Dirty blankets stored damp grow mold and attract pests. Clean ones last years longer.
Most home washers can't handle a horse blanket — the weight and bulk will throw the drum off balance or damage the machine. At Ponderay Laundromat, we wash horse blankets in our commercial-grade machines. Call ahead to (208) 255-2233 to confirm availability and schedule a drop-off.
2. Winter Outerwear
Down jackets, ski bibs, and insulated pants all need a wash before going into summer storage. The same rules apply as sleeping bags — gentle cycle, down-safe detergent, low heat in the dryer with tennis balls to restore loft.
Our X-Large machines handle bulky outerwear without the agitator damage that ruins insulation.
3. Work Clothes and Barn Gear
Spring means outdoor work — fencing, landscaping, barn chores. Heavy-duty work clothes with ground-in dirt, grease, or barn residue benefit from our commercial washers that run hotter and have stronger agitation than home units.
- Pre-treat heavy stains before washing
- Use a hot water cycle for work clothes (check labels)
- Don't overload — dirty clothes need room to move
4. Bedding and Comforters
Winter comforters, flannel sheets, and wool blankets — if you haven't washed them since fall, spring is the time. Storing them clean means they're fresh when you pull them back out next October.
King and queen comforters need an X-Large washer. Trying to stuff a king comforter into a standard machine is how you end up with a half-washed, still-damp disaster.
5. The Drop-Off Option
If the pile feels overwhelming, our Wash Dry Fold service exists for exactly this moment. Drop it all off, we handle it, you pick up clean folded laundry within 24 hours. $1.75/lb, $15 minimum.
Commercial clients — ranches, rental properties, lodges — are welcome. Call us to set up a regular arrangement.
